About

Support Maui Fire Victims

Profits from this plant help support Maui Fire victims through the Maui Strong Fund which provides food and shelter to those affected by the worst natural disaster in Hawaii's history. The Plumeria is symbolic of love and friendship with its flowers commonly used to make Hawaiian leis.

The Overall Plant

Native to Central America, the Caribbean, and South America, Plumeria has been introduced and naturalized in many warm locations worldwide, including parts of Asia and the Pacific Islands.  The plant grows as a deciduous tree or large shrub, often reaching heights between 5 to 10 feet. Its branches are thick and fleshy, lending a somewhat unique, sculptural quality to the tree's form.

The Flowers

Arguably the most enchanting feature of the Plumeria tree is its flowers. Blossoming in a myriad of hues - from brilliant whites and yellows to deep reds, pinks, and multiple combinations thereof - Plumeria flowers are a sight to behold. Each flower typically consists of five petal-like lobes arranged in a spiral manner. Beyond their visual appeal, these blossoms are renowned for their intense fragrance, which is most potent at night to lure sphinx moths for pollination. This intoxicating scent is a common ingredient in many perfumes, lotions, and essential oils. Moreover, the flowers are synonymous with the creation of Hawaiian leis, representing welcome, affection, and warmth.

The Foliage

Plumeria leaves are elongated, lance-shaped, and boast a rich green hue. Typically growing between 12 to 20 inches long, they cluster primarily at the tips of the branches. The foliage provides a lush contrast to the vibrant flowers, with some species featuring a unique, vibrant red midrib. While Plumeria is deciduous, which means it sheds its leaves annually, it's the foliage's dense nature during its peak growth that provides a cool shade, making the tree an excellent choice for garden canopies in tropical settings.

The Fruit

Following the flowering season, Plumeria trees produce fruits that are slender, cylindrical pods ranging from 6 to 12 inches in length. These pods, which are technically known as follicles, split open when mature, releasing numerous winged seeds that get carried by the wind. Though the fruit is not typically a focal point of the tree (and is often overlooked due to the emphasis on its flowers), it plays a crucial role in the propagation of this enchanting species.
